The Southern tip of Vancouver Island was once home to expansive ecosystems of Garry oak (over 10,000 hectares in 1800 to 512 in 1997) . Garry oak ecosystems are at risk and many are protected. These groves were a vital food source to the people, plants and animals of this region. Set against a rolling expanse of sheep pasture and the sparkling Juan De Fuca Strait, the gnarly branches and twisting limbs of the majestic Garry oak line the drive to Taylor Beach in Metchosin.

    Whisper

    $100.00$395.00

This work is inspired by the forests near China Beach, Vancouver Island. It encapsulates the visual complexity of the forest; the solidity of massive cedar trunks, the graceful sweep of arched branches, the kaleidoscope of light through the canopy and the wind gently whispering through the boughs.

The ancient forests of Vancouver Island are precious. At over 500 years old, this old growth cedar is majestic and awe-inspiring. It was used as the title inspiration and cover art for Buckman Coe’s album ‘Altar’ (available on Spotify and SoundCloud). When you visit Avatar Grove, look for her on the right hand side of the trail.
