  • The Ambush

    The Ambush

This painting is of a northern coho salmon (which often bare the hooked nose) as it surprises a squid before it can release its ink in hopes of escape. This paintings inspiration comes from exploring the waters surrounding the  many islands found throughout Barkley Sound.

    On patrol – bald eagle

Inspirations come from many different places here on Vancouver Island. I am always drawn to the West Coast and it’s many hidden treasures it offers the curious soul. One can see majestic bald eagles as they patrol their range, always on the look out for a meal. Brady’s Beach is one of (many) favourite places to visit and understand the natural world.

    Eyes on You

    $85.00$595.00

This paintings inspiration came from many years hiking the mountains, tracking the elusive cougar. Most people never see these cats while out exploring, but more times then not, they see you long before you ever see them. Like when you get that funny feeling that you’re being watched and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Don’t be fooled – Vancouver Island has a healthy population of cougars.

This painting’s inspiration came from a rare encounter I had while hiking around a local beaver pond in Port Alberni. This beautiful bird is a black-crowned night heron. My presence probably caused her to miss out on a meal: the rough-shinned newt escaped, leaving behind a few bubbles.

  • Barred owl family

    Barred owl family

Here’s a painting I did of a family group of Barred owls (painted life size)…showing the adult male (female is larger) and two young owlets. I worked on part of this painting on location in the rainforest of cathedral grove for reference. Barred owls are widely distributed throughout a large portion of the Island and may be encountered in a variety of habitats. Watercolour on board.

When out exploring and think you are alone, one never knows who might be watching from afar. I painted this cougar amongst these arbutus trees (which change their colour of bark depending on the season). The ever watchful eyes of the cougar seen here, high above overlooking the northern portion of Sproat lake, known as Taylor Arm.

    The Last Dance

Inspiration comes from countless hours exploring the many rivers and creeks through out the Island. This stream is one of many that drain into Sproat Lake, near Port Alberni. I painted these sockeye salmon (life size) trying to capture the movement between the fish and the riffles of shallow water.
