    Beach Treasures

    $85.00$460.00

I have spent my life beach combing and have always loved the excitement of finding treasures washed ashore. This art piece inspired my upcoming children’s picture book: Seaside Treasures (A Guidebook for Little Beachcombers). Sea glass is a beautiful artifact that can be found almost everywhere on beaches where the surf has pounded and shaped glass fragments into shapes of art. Vintage bottles, jars, and anything made from glass, thrown away in decades past, are tumbled by the waves of the ocean to form beautiful gems of diverse colours.

I love Tofino – my favourite place! This is a sunrise view of Frank Island, which you can walk to when the tide is low. It is at the end of a spit of land that connects South Chesterman and North Chesterman beach.

Ocean at Maple Bay water study

Maple Bay is a beautifully sheltered deep bay that faces Salt Spring Island. At low tide it offers incredible beachcombing and tide pools. And there’s a lot of sea life to see as well, including otters, seals, and the occasional visiting orca whales. This is one my favourite summer swimming spots.

My favourite place to surf in Tofino – Long Beach. The big rock here is Lovekin Rock. Early morning is the best time to get to the beach to surf, especially before it gets windy (which it usually will be on a sunny summer day). The light in the morning is so gorgeous…

    Receding Storm: Botanical Beach

    $85.00$595.00

As a plein air painter, I often work outside and even when pieces like this one are completed in the studio, the sensibility of appreciating non-sunny visual feasts prevails. Botanical Beach is a wonderful place to view the plethora of animal life on the seashore, but it is also a magnificent place to walk the trails while viewing the the magnificent power of the ocean.

A pail and a shovel, soft sand and tidal pools … what could be better. Chesterman Beach is one of the best beaches on Vancouver Island to explore – especially at low tide. Tofino has some of the best tidal flora and fauna from Mexico to Alaska. Sea stars number in the hundreds, orb-like sea anemone and sea urchins cling to rocky tidal caves, and everywhere you step, hermit crabs scuttle.

I find the beautiful west coast so inspiring. We often find sand dollars on Salt Spring Island. Urchin shells are not as common to find here, but a quick nip over to Port Renfrew will bring a wealth of amazing sea creatures in the gorgeous tide pools on Botanical Beach.

Inspirations come from many different places here on Vancouver Island. I am always drawn to the West Coast and it’s many hidden treasures it offers the curious soul. One can see majestic bald eagles as they patrol their range, always on the look out for a meal. Brady’s Beach is one of (many) favourite places to visit and understand the natural world.

Victoria’s Gonzales neighbourhood is well known for its hilltop observatory at Walbran Park and the views from here across the Strait of Juan de Fuca and down to Gonzales Beach. I captured this image while hiking into Schooner Cove in Tofino. It was early morning and we had just reached the beach to discover some perfect conditions. There was a slight mist in the air and the sun was shining perfectly through the trees. As soon as I saw this scene I was super excited and took a ton of photographs!
