    Western Canada Goose

    $85.00$395.00

Canada geese return to the West Coast each spring. This one and it’s mate flew past me as I walked the tide line in Ganges Harbour. It’s a thrill to see and hear the geese, ducks, herons, hummingbirds, eagles and other migratory species set up house for the season.

    Red Tailed Hawk

Ooooh, raptors. Perhaps not the sweetest birds, but possibly the most exciting. They are fierce, and no nonsense. Raptors gotta eat! The call of the Red Tailed Hawk is often heard on the soundtrack of old movie westerns. Listen for them as you hike around this beautiful lake.

    The Duet (This Pacific Life)

    $85.00$480.00

This was inspired by my travels down the Juan de Fuca Trail on Vancouver Island’s West Coast. And by the kelp beds, mussels and, of course, the oh so formal Cormorants. Water fowl for sure but without natural oils to protect their feathers ( like ducks) they must dry their wings in the sun and shore breezes after every dive.

    Somenos Marsh

    $85.00$595.00

I have always loved a good marsh, the sound of birds and life is comforting. And the Somenos Marsh Conservation Area is a really good marsh! It’s a globally significant Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA), and an annual overwintering and feeding spot for waterfowl travelling the Pacific Flyway. Archaeological evidence shows the Cowichan people have occupied the lands in and around the marsh for at least 4,000 years.

Salt Spring is a fabulous place to bird watch, and great place to see raptors like the Bald Eagle, the Swainson’s Hawk and the Red Tailed Hawk.

From the Mean Streets of Fernwood

    $85.00$595.00

Based on the area where the artist keeps his studio, Victoria’s Fernwood neighbourhood is alive with character houses, towering trees, and of course its resident crows. The central house in the painting is loosely based on a similar Queen Anne style house at the corner of Fernwood Road and Pembroke Street, while the crows themselves have been in the community as long as anyone. As the city of Victoria expands and modernizes in the background, the neighbourhood of Fernwood continues to be as vibrant and colourful as ever.

    Pileated Woodpecker

We love seeing Pileated Woodpeckers – the largest woodpeckers in North America, on our walks on Salt Spring. They’re a sight to see with their stunning red crested heads. These territorial birds mate for life, and can be found in mature forests.

West coast rainforests invoke mystery, reverence and humility. We tread quietly among these ancient ones. The solitary raven sifts through the trees over our heads, watching. Are we family or are we a threat?

    Birds of a Feather: Bushtits

    $85.00$595.00

My friend, Louise Osborne, and I decided to do a series of paintings based on the birds in our backyards. Bushtits are aplenty in the grassy oak meadow where we live, and also in the nearby Chinese cemetery, a National Historic Site.

On a blustery March morning I was exploring East Sooke Regional Park when I came upon this fellow. I love cormorants and their postures as they dry off their wings. Even on this blustery and cool day it is necessary to dry off before flight is practical. If you hike along these shoreline trails you will discover these entertaining characters.

I often photograph while I am walking my dog. The Gorge area is full of opportunities to capture, including one of my favourite subjects: crows. These crows were hanging out along the Gorge waterway at the Takata Japanese Garden.

The light on the ocean is so changeable and dramatic on the pacific west coast. I could paint it every day and it would always be unique. This painting captures a moment in time: the wind, the sun, the birds wheeling and calling.

This is the look that a gull gave me when I was sitting on the deck of a cabin near the ocean on Juan De Fuca Strait. I had been having a snack. I believe the gull is asking “where’s mine?”

    Junco

    $85.00$170.00

Black-eyed Juncos are easy to identify for new birders. Those black heads. And pinkish beaks. And that even, musical trill. This one is an Oregon Junco. There’s a rare sub-species to keep an eye out for: the  Gray-headed Junco with a reddish-brown back. Last recorded sighting was in 1975 at the Little Qualicum River estuary.

    Precarious Balance

    $85.00$205.00

This collaged monoprint was inspired by many plein air sessions on the Nanaimo River. I love watching birds and am impressed by people who balance stones along the shore. It occurred to me that the stones could be a metaphor for human relationship to nature. It is clear that this beautiful and necessary balance is becoming more and more precarious. I hope this piece inspires others to consider their balance with nature.
