On patrol – bald eagle
$85.00 – $595.00On patrol – bald eagle
$85.00 – $595.00Inspirations come from many different places here on Vancouver Island. I am always drawn to the West Coast and it’s many hidden treasures it offers the curious soul. One can see majestic bald eagles as they patrol their range, always on the look out for a meal. Brady’s Beach is one of (many) favourite places to visit and understand the natural world.

$85.00 – $465.00One summer day, we were walking along the coast in the breathtaking East Sooke Park, and I settled down to do a series of sketches of this beautiful rugged coastline. Windswept trees, rocky shores scattered with the long spirals of bull kelp, sun casting white across the ocean, islands peeping out like whales from the turquoise sea. It was a blissful landscape.
When I returned to my studio I fused the sketches into one painting.artist: GILLIAN REDWOOD

$85.00 – $460.00Petro-ecomomics. Not a sum-zero game.
$85.00 – $460.00The rocks and waves were encountered as I clamored over the shoreline north of Botany Bay. You need to be careful to keep your footing as one slip into the thrashing and very cold waves could have nasty consequences. It is easy to get seduced by natures beauty into below tidewater situations as well. Being stranded on an incoming tide would turn you into a statistic here so be mindful if you explore this section. The intent of this painting is to consider the impact of that seemingly non-threatening oil tanker on the horizon on this spectacular ecosystem in the foreground.

$85.00 – $460.00Catboomer
$85.00 – $460.00For a few years I painted right up against the ocean, in the little town of Cowichan Bay. My art studio was located between wharfs and fishing boats. For many thousands of years Cowichan Bay was home to Coast Salish people who harvested the wealth of salmon and shellfish found in its many coves, tidal flats and swiftly flowing rivers. Cowichan Bay was the gateway for European settlement of the Cowichan and Chemainus valleys from the early 1860s. This deepwater port remains active to this day, with sport and commercial fishing and log and lumber exports.

$85.00 – $460.00I have spent my life beach combing and have always loved the excitement of finding treasures washed ashore. This art piece inspired my upcoming children’s picture book: Seaside Treasures (A Guidebook for Little Beachcombers). Sea glass is a beautiful artifact that can be found almost everywhere on beaches where the surf has pounded and shaped glass fragments into shapes of art. Vintage bottles, jars, and anything made from glass, thrown away in decades past, are tumbled by the waves of the ocean to form beautiful gems of diverse colours.
