    Mesmerized

I am mesmerized by the constant changes in the sky and drift wood. This is my favourite little segment of beach along Victoria’s most popular footpath. I come here to unwind at the end of my day, with the comfort of the cemetery behind me and the Salish sea stretched out before me.

Impression of the evening surf in the Broken Group. The Broken Group is a group of small islands and islets in the middle of Barkley Sound. A group of outdoor painters take the walk on ferry to Sidney Island and the spit to paint for the afternoon. This one is a view looking north east. The Sidney Spit Marine Park,is a sandy, narrow strip of land that stretches into the sea. The spit’s tidal flats and salt marshes are often overflowing with shorebirds during the bird migrations of spring and fall.

Thanks to wind and current patterns, big storms bring debris from Japan to the west coast of Vancouver Island. Beach combers feel like they’ve won the lottery if they find one of these Japanese glass fishing floats. Many are over 100 years old!

    Visions of Metchosin

    $85.00$465.00

One summer day, we were walking along the coast in the breathtaking East Sooke Park, and I settled down to do a series of sketches of this beautiful rugged coastline. Windswept trees, rocky shores scattered with the long spirals of bull kelp, sun casting white across the ocean, islands peeping out like whales from the turquoise sea. It was a blissful landscape.
When I returned to my studio I fused the sketches into one painting.

For a few years I painted right up against the ocean, in the little town of Cowichan Bay. My art studio was located between wharfs and fishing boats. For many thousands of years Cowichan Bay was home to Coast Salish people who harvested the wealth of salmon and shellfish found in its many coves, tidal flats and swiftly flowing rivers. Cowichan Bay was the gateway for European settlement of the Cowichan and Chemainus valleys from the early 1860s. This deepwater port remains active to this day, with sport and commercial fishing and log and lumber exports.

The mysteries of the sea have inspired creatives for centuries and remain a continual source for contemplation. I am fascinated by the rhythmic sound and motion of waves and wanted to further explore their organic and ever-changing form in greater detail. This piece is one of my favourites in a series of recent watercolour studies, inspired by one of my favourite beaches on the Pacheedaht First Nation reserve land.

This was inspired by my travels down the Juan de Fuca Trail on Vancouver Island’s West Coast. And by the kelp beds, mussels and, of course, the oh so formal Cormorants. Water fowl for sure but without natural oils to protect their feathers ( like ducks) they must dry their wings in the sun and shore breezes after every dive.

I had my studio in Cowichan Bay for a few years (2016-2017) and fell in love with the spirit of the place. The Pacific Sardine is a member of the herring family. This small schooling fish is an important part of our marine ecosystem as food for larger creatures like salmon and humpback whales. Between 1920 and 1940 there was a robust sardine fishery on Vancouver Island.

Inspirations come from many different places here on Vancouver Island. I am always drawn to the West Coast and it’s many hidden treasures it offers the curious soul. One can see majestic bald eagles as they patrol their range, always on the look out for a meal. Brady’s Beach is one of (many) favourite places to visit and understand the natural world.

Winds had howled for days. It was the second storm in just a few weeks. As the storm edged its way back, I headed for the shores. The breaking light was stunning and the waves were still smashing up against the rocks with gusto. There is this sensation of being all in one – a wholeness, alive.

Maple Bay is a beautifully sheltered deep bay that faces Salt Spring Island. At low tide it offers incredible beachcombing and tide pools. And there’s a lot of sea life to see as well, including otters, seals, and the occasional visiting orca whales. This is one my favourite summer swimming spots.

The rocks and waves were encountered as I clamored over the shoreline north of Botany Bay. You need to be careful to keep your footing as one slip into the thrashing and very cold waves could have nasty consequences. It is easy to get seduced by natures beauty into below tidewater situations as well. Being stranded on an incoming tide would turn you into a statistic here so be mindful if you explore this section. The intent of this painting is to consider the impact of that seemingly non-threatening oil tanker on the horizon on this spectacular ecosystem in the foreground.
