    August Kites on the Beach

    $85.00$460.00

It was a hot August day at the beach as I set up to paint en plein air, a warm breeze was blowing and a few kite flyers released their colours into the air as I laid down the foundations to this painting. As I watched paint dry more and more kite addicts surrounded me, I realized I was painting in the middle of a celebration of kites. It was magic!

    Fishing Floats

    $85.00$460.00

Thanks to wind and current patterns, big storms bring debris from Japan to the west coast of Vancouver Island. Beach combers feel like they’ve won the lottery if they find one of these Japanese glass fishing floats. Many are over 100 years old!

    Beach Treasures

    $85.00$460.00

I have spent my life beach combing and have always loved the excitement of finding treasures washed ashore. This art piece inspired my upcoming children’s picture book: Seaside Treasures (A Guidebook for Little Beachcombers). Sea glass is a beautiful artifact that can be found almost everywhere on beaches where the surf has pounded and shaped glass fragments into shapes of art. Vintage bottles, jars, and anything made from glass, thrown away in decades past, are tumbled by the waves of the ocean to form beautiful gems of diverse colours.

For a few years I had an art studio right in the heart of the this tiny seaside village. It’s no wonder Cowichan Bay is the first Cittaslow community in North America.

    Sardines, Thursday

    $85.00$345.00

I had my studio in Cowichan Bay for a few years (2016-2017) and fell in love with the spirit of the place. The Pacific Sardine is a member of the herring family. This small schooling fish is an important part of our marine ecosystem as food for larger creatures like salmon and humpback whales. Between 1920 and 1940 there was a robust sardine fishery on Vancouver Island.

For many years I lived in an off-the-grid cabin at the north end of Galiano Island. This piece captures the view from my studio, and weaves in the powerful majesty of life in the sea.

    Sea Glass Rainbow

    $85.00$460.00

Some call sea glass “mermaid tears”. There is a legend that says sea glass is created when mermaids cry for the people who have lost their lives in he ocean. As the mermaids’ tears hit the water, they turned into magical pieces of frosted glass. This is another piece from my new Children’s Picture Book: Seaside Treasures.

For a few years I painted right up against the ocean, in the little town of Cowichan Bay. My art studio was located between wharfs and fishing boats. For many thousands of years Cowichan Bay was home to Coast Salish people who harvested the wealth of salmon and shellfish found in its many coves, tidal flats and swiftly flowing rivers. Cowichan Bay was the gateway for European settlement of the Cowichan and Chemainus valleys from the early 1860s. This deepwater port remains active to this day, with sport and commercial fishing and log and lumber exports.
