    Newcastle Arbutus

    $85.00$595.00

Walking around Newcastle Island just off of Nanaimo, I spotted this amazing Arbutus tree clinging to the rocks and reaching out over the edge. As if to take in the view from it’s perch, these trees can often live in the harshest of conditions.

On a blustery March morning I was exploring East Sooke Regional Park when I came upon this fellow. I love cormorants and their postures as they dry off their wings. Even on this blustery and cool day it is necessary to dry off before flight is practical. If you hike along these shoreline trails you will discover these entertaining characters.

    The Duet (This Pacific Life)

    $85.00$480.00

This was inspired by my travels down the Juan de Fuca Trail on Vancouver Island’s West Coast. And by the kelp beds, mussels and, of course, the oh so formal Cormorants. Water fowl for sure but without natural oils to protect their feathers ( like ducks) they must dry their wings in the sun and shore breezes after every dive.

    Sardines, Thursday

    $85.00$345.00

I had my studio in Cowichan Bay for a few years (2016-2017) and fell in love with the spirit of the place. The Pacific Sardine is a member of the herring family. This small schooling fish is an important part of our marine ecosystem as food for larger creatures like salmon and humpback whales. Between 1920 and 1940 there was a robust sardine fishery on Vancouver Island.

    On the Rocks in Tofino

    $85.00$205.00

A visceral impact of sea on rocks moves our body into the seascape, releasing the totality of the water’s energy to the viewer. Tofino, part of the west coast of Vancouver Island in southern British Columbia, Canada, demands our respect, gratitude and fearless appreciation for all that is alive. Without compromise, we breathe.

For a few years I painted right up against the ocean, in the little town of Cowichan Bay. My art studio was located between wharfs and fishing boats. For many thousands of years Cowichan Bay was home to Coast Salish people who harvested the wealth of salmon and shellfish found in its many coves, tidal flats and swiftly flowing rivers. Cowichan Bay was the gateway for European settlement of the Cowichan and Chemainus valleys from the early 1860s. This deepwater port remains active to this day, with sport and commercial fishing and log and lumber exports.

    Visions of Metchosin

    $85.00$465.00

One summer day, we were walking along the coast in the breathtaking East Sooke Park, and I settled down to do a series of sketches of this beautiful rugged coastline. Windswept trees, rocky shores scattered with the long spirals of bull kelp, sun casting white across the ocean, islands peeping out like whales from the turquoise sea. It was a blissful landscape.
When I returned to my studio I fused the sketches into one painting.

I captured this image while hiking into Schooner Cove in Tofino. It was early morning and we had just reached the beach to discover some perfect conditions. There was a slight mist in the air and the sun was shining perfectly through the trees. As soon as I saw this scene I was super excited and took a ton of photographs! Sometimes it is just about being there at the right moment.

This tiny community on the West Coast of Vancouver Island was originally populated by the Huu-ay-aht First Nation. Europeans arrived and formed a small fishing village sometime in the late 1800s. Most of the Huu-ay-aht people now live in the neighbouring village of Anacla, about 5 kilometres from Bamfield.

The west coast offers an endless variety of compositional possibilities to the artist. Botany Bay near Port Renfrew inspired this piece. I stood on the shore for hours absorbing the feeling of the place and the character of the elements. Small preliminary sketches begin my process. Back at my studio I composed this painting with the foreground rocks designed to represent the eroding yet steadfast island resisting the relentless seas.

Victoria’s Gonzales neighbourhood is well known for its hilltop observatory at Walbran Park and the views from here across the Strait of Juan de Fuca and down to Gonzales Beach. The rocks and waves were encountered as I clamored over the shoreline north of Botany Bay. You need to be careful to keep your footing as one slip into the thrashing and very cold waves could have nasty consequences. It is easy to get seduced by natures beauty into below tidewater situations as well. Being stranded on an incoming tide would turn you into a statistic here so be mindful if you explore this section. The intent of this painting is to consider the impact of that seemingly non-threatening oil tanker on the horizon on this spectacular ecosystem in the foreground.

My favourite place to surf in Tofino – Long Beach. The big rock here is Lovekin Rock. Early morning is the best time to get to the beach to surf, especially before it gets windy (which it usually will be on a sunny summer day). The light in the morning is so gorgeous…
