A Good Day For Ice Cream

    $85.00$595.00

The shape of this thickly padded rock near the edge of a cliff at Mt. Wells Regional Park made me think of an ice cream cone. The forests here are often messy in their natural state, so it’s nice when you can rest your eye on a simple shape.

The easily navigated South Beach and Nuu-chah-nulth Trail leads to this incredible beach south end of Wickaninnish Beach in beautiful Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. This place is an artist’s dream and I have been fortunate to have spent many hours there. Wild and wet or sapphire blue and serene. This is the beach with everything…exciting, inspirational and just plain awesome!

Mystic Beach is a popular hike to see the waterfall and enjoy the scenic views. The trail is actually part of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail so is fairly well maintained. On the walk to the beach you descend numerous stairs, but the hike is worth it. Taking photos of sunsets means hiking out in the dark wilderness!

This big old barn is a protected historical building in Burgoyne Bay Regional Park, Salt Spring Island. The park contains wooded Douglas-fir forests, threatened Garry oak trees, rocky shorelines, open grasslands, culturally significant sites (First Nation middens and gathering places), and a number of other old and historic farm buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s. You will see this barn on the left as you drive along Burgoyne Bay Road. Park your car and enjoy a favourite island hike.

    Precarious Balance

This collaged monoprint was inspired by many plein air sessions on the Nanaimo River. I love watching birds and am impressed by people who balance stones along the shore. It occurred to me that the stones could be a metaphor for human relationship to nature. It is clear that this beautiful and necessary balance is becoming more and more precarious. I hope this piece inspires others to consider their balance with nature.

“Mossy Forest” was inspired by the forests that surround Campbell River, including the incredible Elk Falls Park. The majestic trees covered with moss are a staple in the Vancouver Island landscape. You can feel the coolness of the greenery that reminds you of a walk in a forest. The sight of rotting logs and vegetation that sustains and maintains the forest life. Simply magical.

Being an artist means composing, designing or creating visual poetry but never replicating or transcribing. Leave that to the camera. Whistler was criticized in his day for saying that he rearranged his compositions because nature never got it right. BUT – this place, Little Qualicum Falls is perfect. There is nothing I could do to improve or enhance the scene. Magic!

The forest is a huge reason I moved to the island. That and the ocean. If ever I need a boost in my life I go into the forest to reset the ‘refresh’ button. Light can look different there, smells are earthy, sounds of the leaves in the wind are all soothing. My inspiration for this piece is the Upper Maple Syrup Trail on Maple Mountain.

Spectacular arbutus and moss covered viewpoints abound. Well worth a visit. The deer are very aware over the ever-present cougars and so keep a pretty low profile. I came across this one in the interior of the park. This tree in the foreground is distinctive so you will recognize it if you explore this magical place.
