Altar
$115.00 – $360.00Altar
$115.00 – $360.00The ancient forests of Vancouver Island are precious. At over 500 years old, this old growth cedar is majestic and awe-inspiring. It was used as the title inspiration and cover art for Buckman Coe’s album ‘Altar’ (available on Spotify and SoundCloud). When you visit Avatar Grove, look for her on the right hand side of the trail.

$85.00 – $595.00One of my favourite places to stop on my way to Tofino is Cathedral Grove. Those big mossy trees are so impressive and inspiring. The different colours of the long, textured bark make old trees beautiful and unique. Cathedral Grove is a 300 hectare provincial park that showcases an ancient Douglas fir ecosystem, stewarded by the Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Presently, the biggest trees in the Grove are about 800 years old; they are the survivors of a forest fire that ravaged the area about 350 years ago.

$85.00 – $500.00This painting was inspired by the old growth forests in the Broken Islands Group. In the different stages of the forest, nurse logs play a very important roll. A nurse log is a fallen tree which, as it decays, provides ecological support and nourishment to seedlings.

$100.00 – $505.00The Southern tip of Vancouver Island was once home to expansive ecosystems of Garry oak (over 10,000 hectares in 1800 to 512 in 1997) . Garry oak ecosystems are at risk and many are protected. These groves were a vital food source to the people, plants and animals of this region. Set against a rolling expanse of sheep pasture and the sparkling Juan De Fuca Strait, the gnarly branches and twisting limbs of the majestic Garry oak line the drive to Taylor Beach in Metchosin.

$100.00 – $395.00This work is inspired by the forests near China Beach, Vancouver Island. It encapsulates the visual complexity of the forest; the solidity of massive cedar trunks, the graceful sweep of arched branches, the kaleidoscope of light through the canopy and the wind gently whispering through the boughs.

Red rings

$100.00 – $595.00This venetian plaster painting honours the Cheewaht Giant – a massive Western red cedar tree near Cheewaht Lake. The Giant is Canada’s largest known tree. The western red cedar has been called “the cornerstone of Northwest Coast aboriginal culture,” and has great spiritual significance. With much of Vancouver Island having been logged two or three times, these giants are now rare. Luckily, this tree is protected within the boundaries of Pacific Rim National Park, which is located in the tradition territory of the Ditidaht People.
