The Southern tip of Vancouver Island was once home to expansive ecosystems of Garry oak (over 10,000 hectares in 1800 to 512 in 1997) . Garry oak ecosystems are at risk and many are protected. These groves were a vital food source to the people, plants and animals of this region. Set against a rolling expanse of sheep pasture and the sparkling Juan De Fuca Strait, the gnarly branches and twisting limbs of the majestic Garry oak line the drive to Taylor Beach in Metchosin.
