I am driven to create work that is perceived by the viewer to be “beautiful”, that promotes a release of dopamine in their brain. That emotional response will engage people’s imagination and they then will consider the subject more intimately than if they only relate intellectually. My inspiration is the people and places of Vancouver Island.
The west coast offers an endless variety of compositional possibilities to the artist. Botany Bay near Port Renfrew inspired this piece. I stood on the shore for hours absorbing the feeling of the place and the character of the elements. Small preliminary sketches begin my process. Back at my studio I composed this painting with the foreground rocks designed to represent the eroding yet steadfast island resisting the relentless seas.
