Mike Semkiw was born and raised on Vancouver Island. He is a self taught wildlife artist with over 40 + years experience creating Canadian wildlife art in water colours, graphite and acrylics. Mike’s love for wildlife and nature drives him to perfect the hyper-realism and usage of colour blending along with his enthusiasm in his work. He has received many awards and much recognition over the years and was a participant in the formation of Carmanah Pacific Provincial Park and documented in “Carmanah Artistic Visions of a Ancient Rainforest”.
This painting’s inspiration came from a rare encounter I had while hiking around a local beaver pond in Port Alberni. This beautiful bird is a black-crowned night heron. My presence probably caused her to miss out on a meal: the rough-shinned newt escaped, leaving behind a few bubbles.
