Douglas Penhale is a Canadian wildlife artist and children’s book illustrator living on Salt Spring Island. His career has taken him from graphic design at the Calgary Zoo, to projects for Fisheries and Oceans Canada. His stunning wildlife illustrations have graced the pages of many books for children including Sky Dancers, Coyotes in the Crosswalk and Why Seals Blow Their Noses, all written by Diane Swanson. He also illustrated The Coastal Birders Journal by Bruce Obee and countless others.
We love seeing Pileated Woodpeckers – the largest woodpeckers in North America, on our walks on Salt Spring. They’re a sight to see with their stunning red crested heads. These territorial birds mate for life, and can be found in mature forests.
