    Gonzales

    $85.00$500.00

Victoria’s Gonzales neighbourhood is well known for its hilltop observatory at Walbran Park and the views from here across the Strait of Juan de Fuca and down to Gonzales Beach. Like many of my paintings I have skewed the perspective to capture these landmarks into one stylized look at the area as a whole.

This is a spot south of Willow Point where we go with friends to have a bonfire, usually on Sunday evenings. I went a little earlier in the day to catch the light. One of our favorite spots.

    On the Rocks in Tofino

    $85.00$205.00

A visceral impact of sea on rocks moves our body into the seascape, releasing the totality of the water’s energy to the viewer. Tofino, part of the west coast of Vancouver Island in southern British Columbia, Canada, demands our respect, gratitude and fearless appreciation for all that is alive. Without compromise, we breathe.

One day while walking into town along the Westsong walkway I noticed the Victoria skyline across the harbour appeared almost like the cover of a New Yorker magazine. The way the buildings and streets receded up the hill caught my eye. This image is the result of that observation.

    Schooner Cove, Tofino

Schooner Cove Beach in Pacific Rim National Park is a magnificent site for artists. It has what I call “lots of architecture”, rocky shores and headlands overhung with Cedar and Hemlock and also craggy outcrops that spring from the golden sands and become islands at high tide. It’s easy to get to along the Schooner Cove Trail.

This painting was inspired by Florencia Beach in Ucluelet. I am always attracted to the edge of water and I wanted to capture the sensation of waves cascading onto the beach. And yes, I did get my feet wet as I was capturing my reference image!

The light on the ocean is so changeable and dramatic on the pacific west coast. I could paint it every day and it would always be unique. This painting captures a moment in time: the wind, the sun, the birds wheeling and calling.

    Sea Glass Rainbow

Some call sea glass “mermaid tears”. There is a legend that says sea glass is created when mermaids cry for the people who have lost their lives in he ocean. As the mermaids’ tears hit the water, they turned into magical pieces of frosted glass. This is another piece from my new Children’s Picture Book: Seaside Treasures.

The Wind Blows in All Directions on St John’s Point

In 2017 the Mayne Island Conservancy was busy raising money to save Saint John’s Point from development. This painting is one that I did from sketches made on site, and proceeds from the sale of the original were donated to this cause. The Conservancy saved the Point, a magnificent stretch of Coastal Douglas Fir landscape and over 2 km of coastline.

This tiny community on the West Coast of Vancouver Island was originally populated by the Huu-ay-aht First Nation. Europeans arrived and formed a small fishing village sometime in the late 1800s. Most of the Huu-ay-aht people now live in the neighbouring village of Anacla, about 5 kilometres from Bamfield.

This venetian plaster painting honours the Cheewaht Giant – a massive Western red cedar tree near Cheewaht Lake. The Giant is Canada’s largest known tree. The western red cedar has been called “the cornerstone of Northwest Coast aboriginal culture,” and has great spiritual significance. With much of Vancouver Island having been logged two or three times, these giants are now rare. Luckily, this tree is protected within the boundaries of Pacific Rim National Park, which is located in the tradition territory of the Ditidaht People.
