    A Rare Breed

We went out for lunch at the Glenrosa Farm Restaurant in Metchosin and saw a few ewes pruning the trees they were under. I started thinking about how trees shaped by ewes morph into ewes.

Finding a sea urchin shell is a beachcomber’s dream. The occupant and spikes long gone, this grand exoskeleton was found while camping at a remote beach on Haida Gwaii. I later learned sea uchin are a staple in the diet of the Haida people.

The Sooke Harbour is a place where one can still find many colourful wooden working boats, reminders of a time gone by. These colourful work-horses are reflected in the often calm waters to make complex and beautiful patterns and reflections. I often take photographs of these boats from my kayak which lends a refreshingly different point of view.

Squared with a Breezy Bay morning view from the deck of one of the oldest farm houses on Saturna Island in British Columbia, Canada. This painting is more than a nostalgic moment. It is about a global myth and a modern-day fantasy. I leave you with its loose grasp on your critical thinking. I leave you within the warmth of our common dream.

This venetian plaster painting honours the Cheewaht Giant – a massive Western red cedar tree near Cheewaht Lake. The Giant is Canada’s largest known tree. The western red cedar has been called “the cornerstone of Northwest Coast aboriginal culture,” and has great spiritual significance. With much of Vancouver Island having been logged two or three times, these giants are now rare. Luckily, this tree is protected within the boundaries of Pacific Rim National Park, which is located in the tradition territory of the Ditidaht People.

    Cole Island National Historic Site

    $85.00$465.00

Cole Island is a provincial and a national historic site located in Esquimalt Harbour. In 1860, the Royal Navy began construction of a munitions depot on Cole Island. Eventually, 16 solid structures were used to store and recondition highly explosive munitions during the Crimean war and throughout World War One. Five buildings remain. The beautiful island is open to the public during daylight hours, and many kayakers and other boaters stop there to take the self-guided tour.

    Big Ol’ Barn

This big old barn is a protected historical building in Burgoyne Bay Regional Park, Salt Spring Island. The park contains wooded Douglas-fir forests, threatened Garry oak trees, rocky shorelines, open grasslands, culturally significant sites (First Nation middens and gathering places), and a number of other old and historic farm buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s. You will see this barn on the left as you drive along Burgoyne Bay Road. Park your car and enjoy a favourite island hike.

    Precarious Balance

    $85.00$205.00

This collaged monoprint was inspired by many plein air sessions on the Nanaimo River. I love watching birds and am impressed by people who balance stones along the shore. It occurred to me that the stones could be a metaphor for human relationship to nature. It is clear that this beautiful and necessary balance is becoming more and more precarious. I hope this piece inspires others to consider their balance with nature.

    Sidney Harbour Winter Sunrise #7

Walking on the seawall in an early morning walk after a late night flight, I was treated to this spectacular winter sunrise from Sidney. The layers of cloud and veiled light provided subtle and unexpected colours and shapes. This piece was painted wet on wet with a lot of running of the acrylic paint and I was thoroughly satisfied with the feeling it evokes.

Inspirations come from many different places here on Vancouver Island. I am always drawn to the West Coast and it’s many hidden treasures it offers the curious soul. One can see majestic bald eagles as they patrol their range, always on the look out for a meal. Brady’s Beach is one of (many) favourite places to visit and understand the natural world.

Rolling Hills and small farms abound across the fertile landscape of southern Vancouver Island. The Coast Salish peoples have been farming this land for thousands of years, and non-Indigenous settlers started establishing farms here in the late 1850s, flocking to Victoria and Cowichan after the collapse of the Fraser River gold boom on the BC Mainland.

Anglers blaze winter months in pursuit of one elusive silver prized steelhead, a salmonoid that demands dedication and a commitment of many hours to hook even one. The pursuit is an act of fisherman’s patience — one with no guarantee of success but one that offers the potential for thrill unmatched by any other fish species that swims BC’s river’s. Top 6 Steelhead rivers on Vancouver Island: Cowichan River, The San Juan River, Stamp-Somass-Sproat River, Gold River, Nimpkish River.
