From the Mean Streets of Fernwood

    $85.00$595.00

Based on the area where the artist keeps his studio, Victoria’s Fernwood neighbourhood is alive with character houses, towering trees, and of course its resident crows. The central house in the painting is loosely based on a similar Queen Anne style house at the corner of Fernwood Road and Pembroke Street, while the crows themselves have been in the community as long as anyone. As the city of Victoria expands and modernizes in the background, the neighbourhood of Fernwood continues to be as vibrant and colourful as ever.

    Red rings

This venetian plaster painting honours the Cheewaht Giant – a massive Western red cedar tree near Cheewaht Lake. The Giant is Canada’s largest known tree. The western red cedar has been called “the cornerstone of Northwest Coast aboriginal culture,” and has great spiritual significance. With much of Vancouver Island having been logged two or three times, these giants are now rare. Luckily, this tree is protected within the boundaries of Pacific Rim National Park, which is located in the tradition territory of the Ditidaht People.

    Yellow Bike

    $135.00$480.00

Vancouver Island offers so many places to mountain bike single tracks of various degrees of difficulty. The Hartland Trails on the slopes of Mt. Work provide classic west-coat mountain biking year round.  I am amazed at the skill women and men display winding between Douglas fir, cedar and arbutus trees. In this painting I just love the angle at which the rider is riding off the canvas.

    Visions of Metchosin

    $85.00$465.00

One summer day, we were walking along the coast in the breathtaking East Sooke Park, and I settled down to do a series of sketches of this beautiful rugged coastline. Windswept trees, rocky shores scattered with the long spirals of bull kelp, sun casting white across the ocean, islands peeping out like whales from the turquoise sea. It was a blissful landscape.
When I returned to my studio I fused the sketches into one painting.

    WAVES STUDY 1

The mysteries of the sea have inspired creatives for centuries and remain a continual source for contemplation. I am fascinated by the rhythmic sound and motion of waves and wanted to further explore their organic and ever-changing form in greater detail. This piece is one of my favourites in a series of recent watercolour studies, inspired by one of my favourite beaches on the Pacheedaht First Nation reserve land.

Victoria’s Gonzales neighbourhood is well known for its hilltop observatory at Walbran Park and the views from here across the Strait of Juan de Fuca and down to Gonzales Beach. Precarious Balance

    $85.00$205.00

This collaged monoprint was inspired by many plein air sessions on the Nanaimo River. I love watching birds and am impressed by people who balance stones along the shore. It occurred to me that the stones could be a metaphor for human relationship to nature. It is clear that this beautiful and necessary balance is becoming more and more precarious. I hope this piece inspires others to consider their balance with nature.

In 1886 Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, traveled to Shawnigan to personally hammer in the last spike of the new coast to coast railroad. Soon after a mill opened on the lake, making use of the rail line to transport logs to market. Shaw. The name Shawnigan is an adaptation of the Hul̓q̓umín̓um̓ (Coast Salish) name Shaanii’us.

The forest is a huge reason I moved to the island. That and the ocean. If ever I need a boost in my life I go into the forest to reset the ‘refresh’ button. Light can look different there, smells are earthy, sounds of the leaves in the wind are all soothing. My inspiration for this piece is the Upper Maple Syrup Trail on Maple Mountain.

    Sardines, Thursday

    $85.00$345.00

I had my studio in Cowichan Bay for a few years (2016-2017) and fell in love with the spirit of the place. The Pacific Sardine is a member of the herring family. This small schooling fish is an important part of our marine ecosystem as food for larger creatures like salmon and humpback whales. Between 1920 and 1940 there was a robust sardine fishery on Vancouver Island.

Some call sea glass “mermaid tears”. There is a legend that says sea glass is created when mermaids cry for the people who have lost their lives in he ocean. As the mermaids’ tears hit the water, they turned into magical pieces of frosted glass. This is another piece from my new Children’s Picture Book: Seaside Treasures.
